In the past, Mestré was the principal farm of the Abbaye de Fonteyrault.

 From the XII and the XIII centuries remain 3 main buildings, including a small chapel.

The rest of a Roman road gives evidence of the importance of the place for travellers and later the pelerines followed this road toward st Jacques de Compostelle.
